What are Worm Castings?
Worm Castings aka “Black Gold” is an organic fertiliser that is produced from earthworms, it’s their poo :-). Also known as Worm Poo (shocker), Worm Castings provide the organic components with soil enriching microbes & nutrients.
How do I use Worm Castings?
- Worm Castings can be mixed as a part of the organic component in cacti substrates. In the substrate that I offer, I use 50% sieved compost with 50% worm castings.
- It can also be added as a top dress for existing plants which will get watered in as you feed.
- You can make a compost tea which is a fantastic organic fertiliser to increase microbe presence.
Using worm castings in cactus soil
Worm castings are best used as the organic part of a cactus substrate rather than as a full potting mix on their own. They can add gentle nutrition and structure, but they should be balanced with inorganic material such as pumice, grit or sand so the pot still drains quickly.
- Trichocereus mix: useful in the organic portion for seedlings and active growers.
- Lophophora mix: use sparingly because these plants generally prefer a leaner, more mineral substrate.
- Top dressing: small amounts can be watered in during the growing season.
For ratios and mix examples, read the cactus substrate guide.
