Overview
This is a one-off grafted mother plant of Trichocereus pachanoi ‘Rod’, an Ecuadorian pachanoi-type clone that has become well known among Trichocereus collectors for its clean rib structure, rounded form, strong areole character, and blue-green mature growth.
The main ‘Rod’ pup is now around 22 cm, with a total plant height of approximately 64 cm from the base of the rootstock. This is not a small starter graft or a fresh propagation piece, it is an established mother graft with a well-developed scion, active growing tip, and plenty of future potential.
Visually, this plant has a lovely rounded pachanoi form, broad ribs, neat woolly areoles, short spination, and a calm blue-green epidermis. The top growth shows a slightly softer green flush around the growing point, which is typical of active growth.

Genetics & Background
Trichocereus pachanoi ‘Rod’
‘Rod’ is generally grown as an Ecuadorian pachanoi-type clone. It is associated with the Australian SAB collecting scene and is valued for its distinctive pachanoi morphology, including strong V-notching above the areoles, rounded ribs, short spines, and blue-green older growth.
Trichocereus pachanoi rootstock
The rootstock is also Trichocereus pachanoi, making this a pachanoi-on-pachanoi graft. This keeps the plant vigorous while still maintaining a clean, compatible Trichocereus base.
Together, the result is a strong collector graft with established growth and a much more substantial presence than a small rooted cutting or young graft.
What to Expect
- Growth rate: strong once settled, especially during warm active growth
- Mature form: upright columnar pachanoi-type growth with rounded ribs
- Colour: blue-green mature growth, with fresher green tones near the growing point
- Spines: short, tidy spination from woolly areoles
- Difficulty: easy to moderate, provided it is grown dry, bright, and with good airflow
Grower Notes
Grow this as a mature grafted Trichocereus rather than a pampered seedling. Bright light, strong airflow, and a free-draining cactus mix will keep it compact and healthy. In a UK greenhouse, it should do very well with sensible watering through the growing season and a dry winter rest.
The graft union is fully visible and healed. This is normal for an older grafted specimen and part of the plant’s history, not a fault. As with most grafted Trichocereus, avoid keeping the rootstock cold and wet for long periods.
What Makes This One Special
- Established grafted mother plant, not a small propagation
- Sought-after Trichocereus pachanoi ‘Rod’ clone
- Ecuadorian pachanoi-type character
- Blue-green mature growth with clean rib structure
- Pachanoi-on-pachanoi graft
- Exact plant shown in the photos
- Good future propagation potential once further growth develops
Collector Appeal
This will suit a grower who wants a larger, established ‘Rod’ specimen rather than waiting years for a smaller piece to size up. It has the presence of a proper mother plant and the practical advantage of being grafted onto strong Trichocereus pachanoi rootstock.
Important Notes
This is a grafted plant with a visible healed graft union and normal surface marks from greenhouse cultivation. Colour may vary through the season depending on light, temperature, and active growth.
