Overview

‘Hulk’s Balls’ is a compact monstrose form usually described by growers as a stacker. Instead of settling into normal columnar growth, the growing tip repeatedly terminates and restarts, building rounded sections one on top of another. The result is a cactus that looks less like a column and more like a chain of green, spiny beads.

This exact cut already shows the character clearly, with three rounded sections, fresh green growth and short golden spines. It is only a small piece, but it is not being shy about what it wants to become.

What Makes This One Special

‘Hulk’s Balls’ is circulated as an Australian mutant selected from the Zelly 5 x Zelly 6 cross. Its repeated termination is the feature that creates the ball-on-ball stacking effect and separates it from ordinary columnar Trichocereus growth.

There is not a great deal of published history around the clone, but its appearance is unmistakable once mature. The mother plant pictured here shows how heavily it can branch and stack, with multiple rounded tips pushing at the same time.

Genetic Background

Misplant describes both Zelly 5 and Zelly 6 as flowering hybrids created for unusual flower colour and growth characteristics. Each comes from a cross involving Trichocereus scopulicola and a coloured-flowering Trichocereus grandiflorus, making ‘Hulk’s Balls’ a hybrid built from two scopulicola x grandiflorus parent lines.

The exact origin of the stacking mutation is not documented in detail, so it is best understood as a selected growth mutation within that Zelly 5 x Zelly 6 cross rather than a separate species or botanical form.

Grower Notes

Once the cut surface is fully dry and callused, set the piece upright in a very free-draining Trichocereus mix. Keep it warm with good airflow and avoid heavy watering until roots have begun to form. Small monstrose pieces can take their time, so do not try to hurry things with wet compost.

Give it bright light once established, introducing stronger sun gradually. Keep it frost-free and comparatively dry through the UK winter.

Important Notes

Stacking growth is naturally variable. The size and spacing of each rounded section can change as the plant matures and responds to light, warmth and feeding. That unpredictability is part of the character of this clone.
