Overview

This is a proper collector-grade piece of Trichocereus peruvianus ‘Haage’, showing the bold variegation this clone is known for. The plant carries wide ribs, firm peruvianus-type structure, dark spines, and a striking mix of lemon-yellow variegation with blue-green marbling across the body.

Unlike many variegated Trichocereus, which can be awkward, soft, or prone to scorching, this clone has proven remarkably tough here. It has been grown in full sun alongside standard green Trichocereus, and has handled it far better than most variegates. That does not mean it should be thrown straight into full sun from a shaded box, don’t be daft, but once acclimatised this is a far more practical grower than the usual delicate variegated cactus nonsense.

Trichocereus peruvianus ‘Haage’

This clone is generally associated with the old Kakteen Haage material, with the name used in cultivation for a distinctive variegated peruvianus-type Trichocereus. As with many old clone names, the exact background can be a little messy depending on source, but the plant itself is unmistakable: strong ribbing, blue-green peruvianus character, and stable yellow variegation.

The main appeal here is not just that it is variegated, but that the variegation appears stable and practical in growth. Some variegates look great for five minutes and then punish you for owning them. This one has been a much better behaved plant.

Grower Notes

Treat this as a variegated collector cactus, even though it is tougher than most. Let the cut end callus fully before potting, then root into a free-draining cactus substrate with plenty of mineral content.

Once rooted, give bright light and excellent airflow. It can handle strong light when properly acclimatised, but if it arrives from shipping or has been indoors, increase exposure gradually. Variegated tissue has less chlorophyll, so sudden harsh sun can still mark it if rushed.

Water only once actively rooting or established, then allow the substrate to dry properly between watering. In the UK, this is best grown in a greenhouse, bright conservatory, or under strong protected light with good ventilation.

Important Notes

Variegation can shift slightly as the plant grows. New growth may show different balances of yellow, blue, and green depending on season, light, feeding, and overall growing conditions. This is normal for variegated Trichocereus.

The plant has shown excellent sun tolerance here, but buyer conditions will vary, so acclimatisation is still important.
