Trichocereus pachanoi ‘Fields’ x Trichocereus pachanoi ‘Yowie’

A large, blue-green Trichocereus pachanoi with strong Australian Fields (legendary) collection influence and a clean, mature columnar form.

Size: 56cm From Base, fully established root system.

All plants are sent bare root to protect the root system from damage.

Overview

This is a standout Trichocereus pachanoi cross combining two Australian-linked pachanoi-type lines, Fields and Yowie. Both names are tied, directly or indirectly, to the well-known Fields collection in Australia, a collection with real historical weight among Trichocereus growers.

The plant shown has developed into a thick, upright column with broad rounded ribs, a glaucous blue-green skin, tidy areoles, and short golden-brown spination. It has that classic old-school pachanoi presence, not overly spiny, not skinny, and with a strong sculptural profile.

At roughly 55 cm plus, this is not a little seedling guessing game anymore. You are looking at an established specimen with its character already showing.

Genetics & Parentage

Trichocereus pachanoi ‘Fields’
A pachanoi-type clone generally associated with Robert Fields’ Australian collection. Details around the exact origin of the Fields pachanoi clone are not as well documented as some other named clones, so it is best treated carefully as a Fields-associated pachanoi rather than over-described as something more specific.

Fields Clone

Fields Pach

Trichocereus pachanoi ‘Yowie’
An Australian Trichocereus pachanoi clone widely grown under the name ‘Yowie’. It is often described as having pronounced ribs and distinctive paired spines, with reported links back to the Fields collection in Victoria.

Yowie Mother Clone

Together, this cross brings two closely related Australian pachanoi-type lines into one plant. The result here is a broad-ribbed, blue-green column with strong ornamental value and solid collector interest.

What to Expect

  • Growth rate: Medium to fast once settled, especially in a warm greenhouse during the growing season
  • Mature form: Upright columnar growth, thick-bodied, with rounded pachanoi-type ribs
  • Colour: Blue-green to glaucous green, with seasonal variation depending on light and growth rate
  • Spines: Short, neat golden-brown spines, generally restrained rather than aggressive
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate, best grown hard with strong light, airflow, and a free-draining cactus soil

Grower Notes

This plant will suit UK greenhouse growing very well. Give it bright light, good airflow, and a mineral-heavy, free-draining cactus substrate. Water properly during active growth, then allow the pot to dry well before watering again.

As with most mature Trichocereus, avoid keeping it wet and cold through winter. A dry, cool rest is the safer approach. The blue-green colour will usually show best with strong light, but ease it into harsher sun if moving it from softer conditions.

There is some basal marking and old growth wear visible near the lower section, which is normal on an established column of this size. The active upper growth is clean, strong, and nicely formed.

Why This One Stands Out

  • Large, established specimen, roughly 55 cm plus
  • Strong Fields collection connection through both sides of the cross
  • Broad, rounded pachanoi-type ribs
  • Attractive blue-green skin
  • Short, tidy spination
  • A proper collector plant rather than a small seedling with potential still hidden

Important Notes

Trichocereus clone history can be messy, especially with older Australian material. ‘Yowie’ is the better documented side of this cross, while ‘Fields’ pachanoi is best described as Fields-associated unless further provenance is available.

The plant shown is the plant being described. Natural marks, lower stem ageing, and seasonal colour shifts are normal for a mature greenhouse-grown Trichocereus.

Some Additional Info

Trichocereus (except for bridgesii / Bolivian Torch) are very hardy and weather tolerant. Trichocereus pachanoi can handle temps as low as -9c for very short periods.

Native to South America, the earliest evidence of San Pedro was found in Peru, specifically, the Guitarrero cave of the Callejón de Huaylas valley. They are natively found in the Andes Mountains at altitude levels around 2000m – 3000m. San Pedro (the class of Trichocereus) is also found in regions like Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela.

Trichocereus pachanoi are night bloomers with these gorgeous flowers doing their thing at night, you have to be quick or you will miss the event :-). A flower event is a special event as it can take anywhere from 5 years to 8 years for an adult plant to produce a flower. When they do, you do your happy dance, thank the cactus Gods, snap a million pics, harvest the pollen, and wait for the next event.

Steps For Rooting

Once the cut is received, place it around 1/2 inch to 1 inch in a pot of substrate. I use wooden kebab skewers to hold up the piece. Water lightly and you should start getting new root growth within a few weeks to a few months depending on conditions.

An alternative way would be to stick them in perlite and wait for them to root, once roots form you can re-pot.

All plants sold are strictly for garden / ornamental purposes, not for human consumption. We are here to cultivate these beautiful plants and spread them as far as we can, nothing outside of growing (all things related to growing) will be tollerated.
