Overview

Lophophora williamsii var. caespitosa Variegated combines the freely offsetting caespitosa habit with contrasting yellow and green growth. The photographed plant has a prominent woolly central head surrounded by smaller offsets, including vivid yellow sections and heads divided between both colours.

Growth & Variegation

Caespitosa is the familiar horticultural name for clustering forms of williamsii. As offsets develop, the plant builds a cushion of rounded heads rather than relying on a solitary crown.

Variegation reflects reduced chlorophyll in the pale tissue. The balance of green and yellow can change as new growth develops; the photographs show this plant’s present pattern rather than a promise that future offsets will match it exactly.

Grower Notes

Use a free-draining, predominantly mineral mix and a pot suited to the root system. Give bright, filtered light, protect the yellow tissue from harsh midday sun and introduce any increase in light gradually. Water according to active growth and drying conditions, keeping the plant much drier during cool dormancy. Avoid water sitting between the heads.

Condition Note

Feed residue: The temporary brown residue visible on the heads is from a fulvic + humate feed. It is expected to wash away gradually during normal watering or feeding, or fade as it breaks down with UV exposure. There is no need to scrub the heads or give extra water to remove it.
