Overview

Trichocereus peruvianus ‘Blue Fatty’ x Cajamarca (TPM) is a seed-grown cross with some wonderfully individual growth. The plants pictured range from broad, upright fans to compact, folded crests, with rounded ridges and clusters of spines following the changing shape of each growing edge.

There is plenty to look at here: deep grooves between fleshy folds, crowded growing points and sections that curve back on themselves. Each seedling has taken the same parentage in its own direction.

Genetics & Parentage

Trichocereus peruvianus ‘Blue Fatty’

Blue Fatty is the named peruvianus parent in this cross. These seedlings are its offspring, each with its own combination of traits, rather than cuttings of the Blue Fatty clone. The parent name does not guarantee a particular colour or mature shape.

Cajamarca — Trichocereus pachanoi monstrose (TPM)

Cajamarca is the TPM parent recorded for this cross, with TPM referring here to Trichocereus pachanoi monstrose. The specimens offered already show unusual growth, including the crested forms visible in their photographs.

Parentage tells part of the story, but the individual plant is what matters when choosing. Even siblings can differ considerably in shape, spination and the way their new growth develops.

Growth Form

The current selection shows several distinct expressions:

• Broad, fan-shaped crests with pronounced vertical folds.
• Compact, rounded crests with crowded, undulating growing edges.
• Deeply folded growth with several visible lobes and congested sections.
• Green to blue-green surfaces, with spine clusters outlining the ridges.

These observations describe the plants pictured today. New growth may widen, fold further or produce more conventional sections; an existing crest is not a fixed template for every future growing point.

Grower Notes

Grow these as you would other young Trichocereus hybrids: bright light, good airflow and a free-draining cactus substrate. Introduce stronger sunlight gradually when moving plants to a new position.

During active growth, water when the substrate has dried sufficiently and allow excess water to drain away. Reduce watering as temperatures and growth fall, and protect the plants from frost and prolonged winter damp.

The folds of a crest can hold moisture around the growing edge. Good ventilation and avoiding water left sitting in those pockets are particularly useful with these shapes.
