Variegated Trichocereus cuzcoensis – Cuts

Overview

This is a variegated form of Trichocereus cuzcoensis, offered as a sizeable unrooted cutting. Cuzcoensis is not always the most loved species in Trichocereus circles, mostly because it tends to be spiny, firm-bodied, and a bit less elegant than some of the pachanoi or peruvianus-type clones, but that is also part of its character.

This cutting has a strong upright columnar form, pronounced ribs, and a cool blue-green body colour. The variegation is present as softer yellow-green streaking and uneven patches through the skin rather than loud, high-contrast sectoral variegation. It is more subtle than shouty, which actually suits the plant quite well.

The spination is very much in the cuzcoensis lane, with long golden to straw-coloured spines, darker tips on some newer growth, and well-spaced areoles. It has a properly rugged look without being messy.

A robust Andean columnar Trichocereus species or species-complex, often recognised by its firm growth, pronounced ribs, and strong spination. Classification around cuzcoensis, peruvianus, and related forms can be messy between growers, but this plant sits comfortably in the cuzcoensis-type range.

Variegated form
The variegation appears as uneven yellow-green marking across the body. As with most variegated cacti, expression can shift with light, growth speed, feeding, and seasonal conditions.

Grower Notes

This one will appreciate bright light, warmth, and airflow. In the UK, it is best grown in a greenhouse, conservatory, or bright protected position during the growing season. Avoid pushing too much water early on, especially while unrooted.

Variegated tissue can be a bit more sensitive than normal green growth, so avoid throwing it straight into harsh full sun after shipping. Acclimatise it properly like a civilised human, not like a savage.
