Overview

This is a chunky old Trichocereus peruvianus Matucana mother plant, originally grown from Matucana-region Peruvianus material. It is not the prettiest stump in the greenhouse, let’s be honest, the old base has done its graft-table-war-veteran routine and carries plenty of age, corking, old cuts, and battle scars.

But the new growth is where this plant earns its keep.

The pups are broad, blue-glaucous, rounded, and very clean, with that classic Matucana-type look collectors tend to chase: thick ribs, strong symmetry, blue-green skin, golden young spines, and a solid upright growth habit. This is a working mother plant, not a polished windowsill ornament, and it has clearly proven itself by producing strong, attractive pups.

What Makes This One Special

This is the sort of plant that looks a bit rough until you realise what it is actually doing. The stump is ugly, no point dressing that up, but it is producing excellent Matucana-type growth.

The pups show:

  • Strong blue glaucous colour
  • Thick, rounded ribs
  • Clean peruvianus-type structure
  • Golden young spination
  • Broad, chunky growth rather than thin columnar growth
  • Good future cutting potential once the pups mature further

For someone who wants a usable Trichocereus peruvianus Matucana mother plant, this has more value than a pretty single column. It is already established, already pupping, and already showing the kind of growth you would want to propagate from.

Grower Notes

Grow in a bright greenhouse with strong airflow and a free-draining cactus soil mix. This plant will appreciate full sun once acclimatised, though the blue waxy bloom can mark if moved too suddenly from softer light into harsh direct sun.

Water well during active growth, then allow the substrate to dry properly before watering again. Keep dry and well ventilated over winter, especially because the old stump has historic scarring and should not be kept damp or crowded.

The active pups should continue to size up nicely through the growing season. Given the age and structure of the plant, it may also produce more offsets from the old stump over time.

Collector Appeal

This is ideal for a grower who values provenance, mature stock, and future propagation potential over showroom perfection. The visual contrast is part of the charm, gnarly old base, beautiful blue new growth. Very much a “function over cosmetics” mother plant, but the function is bloody good.

Important Notes

The old stump is cosmetically rough and heavily scarred. This is clearly shown in the photos and is reflected in the nature of the listing. The value here is in the established mother plant, Matucana-type genetics, and the quality of the pups it is producing.

Colour may vary depending on light, season, feeding, and growing conditions. The blue glaucous coating is strongest under bright, dry greenhouse conditions.

Why This One Stands Out

  • Established Trichocereus peruvianus Matucana mother plant
  • Produces beautiful blue-glaucous pups
  • Strong, chunky peruvianus-type morphology
  • Excellent future propagation potential
  • One-off specimen, exact plant shown
  • Honest old working mother plant, not a polished nursery clone

Steps For Rooting

Once the cut is received, place it around 1/2 inch to 1 inch in a pot of substrate. I use wooden kebab skewers to hold up the piece. Water lightly and you should start getting new root growth within a few weeks to a few months depending on conditions.

An alternative way would be to stick them in perlite and wait for them to root, once roots form you can re-pot.

All plants sold are strictly for garden / ornamental purposes, not for human consumption. We are here to cultivate these beautiful plants and spread them as far as we can, nothing outside of growing (all things related to growing) will be tollerated.
