Trichocereus huanucoensis ‘Misty Evening’ x Trichocereus peruvianus ‘Althea’

A promising Trichocereus seedling cross combining the chunky huanucoensis look of ‘Misty Evening’ with the blue peruvianus influence of ‘Althea’.

This is a seed-grown batch of Trichocereus huanucoensis ‘Misty Evening’ x Trichocereus peruvianus ‘Althea’, bringing together two collector-interest parent plants with strong visual potential.

The seedlings are already showing a clean, upright columnar habit with rounded ribs, neat areoles, and a fresh green to lightly glaucous finish. Some plants are chunkier and more huanucoensis-leaning, while others may develop stronger peruvianus-type traits as they mature. At this size, the full character is still developing, which is half the fun with crosses like this.

This is not a clone, each seedling is genetically individual, so expect natural variation in rib count, colour, spine length, and overall body shape.

Genetics & Parentage

Trichocereus huanucoensis ‘Misty Evening’
‘Misty Evening’ is a huanucoensis clone associated with SoCal growing circles. It is often described as having a blue cast, chunky mature growth, and variable spination, sometimes staying fairly short-spined and sometimes throwing a more obvious central spine.

Trichocereus peruvianus ‘Althea’
‘Althea’ is a well-known GeeBee / Gia peruvianus clone, widely grown for its deep blue glaucous coating, thick growth, and strong collector appeal. It is generally understood to trace back to Icaros DNA seed, giving it that classic blue peruvianus-type backbone.

Together, this cross has the potential for thick-bodied seedlings with good rib structure, blue-green colour, and a solid collector-grade look as they mature.

What to Expect

  • Growth rate: Moderate to good once established, especially in a warm greenhouse through the growing season
  • Mature form: Upright columnar Trichocereus, likely thickening with age
  • Colour: Green to blue-green, with glaucous potential from both sides of the cross
  • Spines: Short to medium spines at this stage, with some seedlings likely to develop stronger central spines over time
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate, suitable for growers already familiar with Trichocereus seedlings

Grower Notes

Grow in a very free-draining cactus mix with good mineral content. These will appreciate bright light, airflow, and sensible watering during active growth.

In the UK, they are best grown in a greenhouse, conservatory, or bright sheltered position through the warmer months. Keep much drier and frost-free over winter. As with most young Trichocereus, avoid pushing them too hard while small, steady growth will give better structure long-term.

Seedlings may mark slightly from overhead watering, handling, or normal greenhouse life, but this does not affect their growing potential.

Why This One Stands Out

  • Strong parentage from two collector-interest Trichocereus lines
  • ‘Misty Evening’ brings huanucoensis chunk and blue-green potential
  • ‘Althea’ adds proven peruvianus colour, girth, and collector appeal
  • Seed-grown variation means each plant can develop its own phenotype
  • A good choice for growers who enjoy watching young plants reveal their character over time

Steps For Rooting

Once the cut is received, place it around 1/2 inch to 1 inch in a pot of substrate. I use wooden kebab skewers to hold up the piece. Water lightly and you should start getting new root growth within a few weeks to a few months depending on conditions.

An alternative way would be to stick them in perlite and wait for them to root, once roots form you can re-pot.

All plants sold are strictly for garden / ornamental purposes, not for human consumption. We are here to cultivate these beautiful plants and spread them as far as we can, nothing outside of growing (all things related to growing) will be tollerated.
